The top 10 poets will battle it out for the title of champion in The Pigeon Presents: Philadelphia Poetry Grand Slam Finals on Friday, May 2nd, 2014 at PhilaMoca.
Since October of 2013, some of Philly’s hottest, poets, emcees and literary talents have gathered each First Friday for monthly slams where participants honed their skills during the pre-show’s The Nest Poetry Workshop and by performing original work for peers and enthusiasts. The competition is judged by the audience, plus each slam has featured a dynamic out-of-town artist, as well as a spotlight on a local poet.
The final slam will consist of four rounds varying in time allotted and/or poem form. Eliminations will be after rounds one and three. Should a tie for first occur, a three minute face off will be the determining factor. The four poets with the highest scores will form the team for The Pigeon that will go on to represent Philadelphia in The National Poetry Slam in Oakland, California.
There will also be special performances by co-organizers and co-hosts Alyesha “Ms. Wise” Wise and Jacob Winterstein.
This all ages event is the last of the season, so the creativity, passion and energy is sure to be at a high. In 2012, The Pigeon was the winner in Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly competition for Best Literary Activity and received a grant in the 2013 Philadelphia Knight Arts Challenge.
